India: the course towards electric vehicles

The Indian government wants to switch the country to electric vehicles by 2030. These ambitious plans are part of a strategy to reduce dependence on imported fuel and environmental safety measures. Gasoline powered vehicles are the cause of the heavy smog that suffocates the inhabitants of Indian megacities.

This topic was addressed at the SOLARGROUP conference in Moscow by the Indian partners. In particular, Kirahjeet Singh shared the latest data on his country in his presentation.

The problem is relevant not only to India. According to the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), despite stricter emissions regulations, pollution from global transportation caused at least 385,000 deaths and $ 1 trillion in health damage in 2015. Long-term exposure to fine particles, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in vehicle exhaust has been linked to lung cancer, heart disease, stroke and asthma. A large percentage of deaths from air pollution occur in China and India.

In order to quickly switch to electric vehicles, the government is preparing a new program in which citizens will be able to buy electric cars on credit without a down payment, and pay off the loan with the money they would otherwise spend on gasoline.

Nitin Gadkari, India's Minister of Road Transport and Highways, stated in June 2022: "In India, the price of all electric cars is to be equal to that of gasoline-powered cars within one year." The Indian government is also working on electric highways that will be powered by solar energy, and this will make it easier to charge heavy trucks and buses while driving.

India's Ministry of Heavy Industries has developed a scheme for accelerated introduction and production of electric vehicles and related infrastructure. Programs for the development of electric vehicles have been adopted not only at the national level, but also in 14 Indian states.

Auto rickshaws and two-wheelers are the most promising for mass electrification in India. They are expected to account for more than 4 million electric vehicles by 2025. India's electric car market is also growing and has the potential to become one of the world's leading markets, with new electric car registrations up 109% in 2021 compared to 2020.

The example of India shows that the world needs electric transportation and innovative solutions for it. Therefore, the services of "Sovelmash", that offers these solutions, are becoming more and more sought-after.
