AERONOVA Airships: selecting the optimal design for ducted propellers
At «AERONOVA», work continues on one of the key components of future control systems — housings for ducted propellers (VKD).
What are VKD and why are they needed?
A ducted propeller is a propeller enclosed in a ring-shaped shroud. This design:
• stabilizes the airflow,
• improves propeller efficiency,
• reduces noise levels,
• enhances low-speed handling.
For airships, where smoothness, precision, and energy efficiency are critical, such solutions are particularly valuable.
What are we working on now?
At the moment, «AERONOVA» specialists are focused on the ring housing, which largely determines the aerodynamics of the entire assembly. The engineers have proposed several design options. All of them are undergoing analysis, simulation, and assessment of aerodynamic performance.
At the current stage, the team has identified two of the most promising solutions. Both were produced on our in-house 3D printers to study their behavior in real-world tests.
What comes next?
In the near term, we will proceed directly to testing. The goal is to determine which housing option delivers maximum efficiency and operating stability.
Comparative tests will help select the final configuration, after which the next stage of development will begin.
We will be sure to show the process and share the results, so stay tuned for updates.
