Project guide: what is the "Sovelmash" D&E?
"Sovelmash" is building a design and engineering technology department using the funds raised through crowdinvesting. It is the only enterprise in the world that develops and puts into production electric motors based on its own inhouse-developed patented "Slavyanka" combined winding technology.
Today we will decipher what this long phrase means. And why it cannot be replaced by the short word "plant".
DESIGN
The enterprise is engaged in design activities. These are the development of engineering, process and other documentation required to manufacture innovative electric motors, production tools and other related items. Moreover, "Sovelmash" develops design documentation to build plants where motors will be produced.
ENGINEERING
Design engineers at "Sovelmash" design motors, tooling and equipment for their production. This includes computer modelling using in-house software and product prototyping. After design and engineering, prototype motor models are built and tested.
TECHNOLOGY
"Sovelmash" builds and refines the technologies to produce developed motors and equipment for their production.
DEPARTMENT
It combines all the above-mentioned processes with the aim of building a business on it. The department is involved in administration, patenting and record keeping. Such activities are needed to secure the company, to stay a few steps ahead of the competitors, to be as self-sufficient as possible and to increase the efficiency of the entire workflow.
The "Sovelmash" D&E is greatly influenced by the experience of Soviet engineering departments, where various specialists worked jointly in the same building and created breakthrough developments for the state.
A plant is a completely different type of enterprises, with fundamentally different tasks. While a D&E is intended to continuously develop new products and improve existing ones, a plant's focus is on efficient production. "Sovelmash" will produce motors at its facilities, but only in small series pilot batches, to demonstrate to its customers the capabilities of automated production.
The facility has an area of 17,000 square metres and is being built in "Technopolis "Moscow". The scheduled completion date is Q3 2023. Next year, it will already be up and running.
